Glass Chapel

Place making through object has played a role in my work almost constantly, the place is not necessarily physical, but no less occupies the mind. The photography of this project turned out to be more interesting than the piece itself which was done with only candle lit illumination. Glass is frequently used to mimic materials that have a short shelf life, in this case I am always reminded of ice formed with leaves remaining trapped until a thaw. Temporal and immaterial, turned quasi immortal, and obliterated to ash in the process.

Utilizing kiln forming and fusing I took large panes of recycled glass and fused them together with leaves from my favorite trees at my home. My objective was to create a surreal space using glass as a material to transport the observer and participant into a moment for meditation. Within the space I included my incense burner, which I cast from a 3d printed object using recycled glass and a heating/burn-out cycle that resulted from my own research into casting delicate forms. I controlled the temperature manually to manage thermal expansion and fusing in both the sheets and the cast object.
